Quick summary
  • ADHD paralysis is often freeze plus overload, not lack of caring
  • The fastest fix is making the first step tiny and safe
  • Timers, body movement, and clarity cues work well

1) What ADHD paralysis feels like

You may sit down ready to work but nothing happens. You might read the same line, open the document and close it, or drift into research and scrolling. The feeling is often urgent and painful because you know time is passing and you still cannot start. This may result to feelings of guilt and frustration, i like to see ADHD paralysis as being like a porsche with no fuel

2) So Why does it happens ?

Because ADHD can reduce the signal that turns intention into action. When a task feels uncertain or high stakes, stress rises. Stress reduces working memory and increases threat. Your brain tries to protect you by freezing, even when the task is safe. The big picture here is that people with ADHD tend to have dysregulated dopamine, which means that sometimes dopamine levels can be too high and sometimes too low. Either extreme can lead to paralysis. It can be even more challenging if you are prone to feeling overwhelmed easily

3)Fast break out tools of an ADHD brain:

  • Two-step approach:If you are feeling overwhelmed, set up the task you have to do and go for a short walk (even indoors) to regulate your nervous system
  • Listening to music: this helped me a lot to give me that dopamine boost. That way i managed to get fairly decent grades at school: like, setting up a task, then taking a 5-10 min break walking/music whith headphones, and be boosted for whatever i had to do, it even triggered hyperfocus sometimes, so i invite you to give it a try.
  • Micro-task + planning: "Ok, it is 2:30 pm, i'll begin at 2:36".
  • I know we often fail to hit our first "challenge" but it's ok if you fail to hit it, keep planning a new deadline goal every 5-10 minutes. It only takes one successful hit to get the ball rolling

4) Prevention that works

Prevention is design. Reduce choices, make the next step obvious and lower the emotional stakes by aiming for a rough first version. The calmer the start, the smoother the follow through
